3-star Edwardian cliff-top hotel with direct sea views in Cromer

Historic Building & Rooms

Opened in 1897, the Cliftonville Hotel is a Grade II-listed Edwardian building with original stained glass windows and a grand staircase. The hotel offers 30 recently refurbished bedrooms, all with unrestricted views of the sea or the Victorian-era Cromer Pier. Room types range from cosy doubles to suites with super king beds and free-standing baths.

Dining & Local Produce

The on-site restaurant operates a seasonally changing menu that focuses on fresh, locally sourced ingredients from Norfolk suppliers. Guests can order from a menu that includes options like whole plaice, crab linguine, and a full English breakfast served to the table. The bar offers a selection of wines, cocktails, and a snack menu, including large pizzas served in trays.

Location & Nearby Attractions

The hotel sits directly on the clifftop overlooking Cromer Beach, a quarter-mile walk from the town centre and Cromer Pier. Nearby attractions include the RNLI Museum on the pier, Amazona Zoo (a 5-minute drive), and the towns of Sheringham, Holt, and Wells-next-the-Sea. Norwich city centre is 23 miles away, accessible by a fast bus or train from the station 5 minutes from the hotel.

Family & Pet-Friendly Amenities

The hotel welcomes children and provides board games, puzzles, Lego, and chess sets in the lounge for indoor entertainment. Dogs are allowed in the hotel and receive a dog bed, bowls, and treats upon arrival. On-site parking is limited and operates on a first-come, first-served basis, with free street parking available on the surrounding roads.

Entertainment & Event Spaces

The hotel hosts live entertainment events, including murder mystery nights, jazz nights, quiz events, and Northern Soul discos in the ballroom. The ballroom features a sprung dance floor and can accommodate weddings for up to 80 day guests and 20 evening guests. The dedicated event spaces also cater to business meetings, with the hotel providing ceremony, dining, and dancing facilities under one roof.

Highlights

Building: Grade II-listed Edwardian hotel from 1897

Views: Sea views from every room

Location: 0.25 miles from Cromer Pier & town centre

Entertainment: Live murder mystery & jazz nights

Dining: Seasonally changing menu with local ingredients

Pet Policy: Dog beds, bowls & treats provided

“The historic architecture, dating back to 1897, certainly offers an inviting glimpse into the past, particularly its proximity to attractions like Cromer Pier; dog-friendly accommodations are a plus. However, reports of outdated rooms and issues with cleanliness definitely give me pause; a refresh seems warranted. The on-site restaurant may be a highlight, yet consistency appears to be key to elevate the overall experience.”

Review summary
Based on recent reviews
Powered by AI
Guests frequently mention the hotel's convenient parking and its location, just a short walk from Cromer centre. Many enjoyed rooms with sea views; room number one is noted as particularly large and with a great sea view, while tower rooms also offer especially good seafront views. The food receives high praise, with both dinner and breakfast being superb and offering good value, even though some find that toast, eggs, and English breakfast are extra. A few guests have commented that the 'comfy double' rooms can be small, and that some bathrooms would benefit from more handrails.

Decent Stay with Minor Issues

great breakfast choices helpful staff nice sea view damaged toilet seat leaking towel rail maintenance need
I booked a Beautiful Double or Twin for my stay. The breakfast choices were great, and there was a lot to pick from. The staff were friendly and always helpful (especially Holly Swan!). The room had a nice view overlooking the sea.
The room definitely needs some simple maintenance. I noticed a damaged toilet seat. There was a leak from the towel rail (it bothered me quite a bit).

mostly positive stay

perfect location lovely view accessible room small room limited space clothes storage
The location was perfect. the view was indeed lovely. the accessible room had only one hand rail in the step in shower. I appreciated that detail.
my parents had a special anniversary treat here. their "comfy double" room was very small. there was limited space for clothes. that is not ideal for a 4 night stay.
